Grizzly mountain 2008

We left Grants Pass around 8 in the morning on fri Adam and I driving our "new" truck and Teri Joe and Taylor driving their Blazer. Adam was not surprised I found a way to fill up not only the trailer, the bed of our truck but the whole crew cab as well, Leaving the dog's once again crammed in the front seat with us and no were for the tool box but under my feet. The trip up to terrabon Takes 4 1/2- 5 hours by car It took us 6 including a stop to stretch ours and the horses legs so not bad.

We got to ride camp around 2. camp is a large fenced in field with no real tree's but a great view around you. after unloading the horses we set up camp. I forgot what fun it is to put up big tent's in strong wind we ended up anchoring the tents to the blazor. On a positive note it was not very cold when the wind was not blowing. I even sold a few spirit beads. After going to get our vet card's and giving the RM the prizes we donated, we took Lexie Jasper and Twilight for a small ride While Teri lunged Jet. The horses all Vet in with A' s I didn't end up needing the release from Jasper's vet but I am still glad I got one just in case. One of the vet's really like Twilight and comment on how nice he is (little does he know lol) With vetting in out of the way we finish setting up camp and Go "shopping" Healthy as a horse was their and we all got one of those neck ditty's so now I know longer have to keep my vet card in my bra so I don't loose/forget it. The temperature dropped with the sun. It was no time at all before we were all freezing our butt's off We bundled up the horses and then ourselves . Ride meeting was at 7:30 We all crammed in one of those canopy/tent's let's just say you got to get real cozy with your neighbor. The ride meeting was short they just went over holds and the vet talked very briefly. Teri ,Taylor and Adam stayed for the new rider's meeting while Joe and I headed back to warm up dinner. We headed to bed at 9, boy was it COLD I layed in bed for an hour under 5 comforters and 3 sleeping bag's before I was warm enough to sleep.

5 am I wake up fifteen min before the alarm and lay their dreading getting out from under the covers's. I Finally make myself get up when I hear Teri up and around. I sleep in my ride clothes so I only had to shiver on my outer layer's. I found my heated insoles and threw those in my shoes they worked GREAT! Teri went to make coffee but the left over ground's and coffee were frozen in the coffee pot, Things were not looking up for the two coffee addicts. With much pounding and some water Teri finally got the whole thing cleaned out enough to make coffee. For breakfast Teri had pre made biscuits and gravy they were awesome but I could only eat a few bites I always get too nervous to eat much ride morning .After I pack every one's saddle and vet bag's, Next time I will definitely do all this the day before like I usually do, having all that to do made me feel rushed the whole morning.

Teri and I see Adam and Taylor off as they start out on their first 50 , then it is our turn I decide to give Jasper a drink before mounting and did one of the dumbest things ever I use my foot to break the ice in the big troth luckily I pulled my foot out before it got very wet . Teri was laughing at me so hard she couldn't get on her horse, all I can say is it was not one of my smarter moments! the start was thankfully uneventful and the miles flew by! Before we knew it We were back at camp for our vet check. Jet pulsed right in and Jasper would of but he was to upset over his new best friend being far away from him and was calling for him and dancing all over the place . Adam and Taylor came in for their first vet check a few min after us so far they were at 22 mile. Lexie however was pulled for a lameness in spite of the slow pace they had kept. Taylor was very relieved when she found a sponsor so she was able to continue. We also picked up a Junior before we left for our final loop . We continued to make good time and the final 10 miles flew by when we came into the finish it was "snowing" little styrofoam type snow and we started freezing as soon as we slowed down. Jet and Jasper both pulse right down this time (I made sure we were close to jet) and Teri was elated to finish her first LD ride. After taking care of the horses we made a sandwich for tay and waited for her to come in from her 18 mile loop. She though she was done when she came in, you should of seen her face when she found out she had 10 more mile's in the freezing cold. She quickly cheered up once she had a hot drink and some food and left out for her final loop smiling. Teri and I used this time to make a quik trip in to town for a "beer run " and returned just in time for the finish.

Everyone cheered for Them as they came in .Twilight vetted in all A's and they showed for BC just for practice since they were the only Junior in the 50. All in all it was a great ride, however since I normally avoid the cold at all cost it will be a very long time (if ever) that i consider letting Adam talk me into this ride again.

30 min after injury area inside yellow is where the skin is disconected from the muscle

I have been seriously thinking of changing my gelding's name from Jasper to calamity !  This is the 3rd time this year he has hurt himself. Jasper has had his own 12x24  area fenced off in the pasture so I could put more weight on him Before grizzley mountain. I let him out last night to "play" for awhile before feeding everyone. when I caught him he was still being goofy looking for thing's to jump at and so on. I get him in his pen and turn to shoo away one of our mare's who wants to join him. he  starts freaking out I drop the lead rope he didn't have a halter or anything on just the rope thrown over his neck luckily. he was running wildly around. I had put a stable type blanket under his turn out because it was realy cold for this time of year
well it must have came unsnapped while he was running around with the other horses and it slid down over his butt when i put him in the pen from what i could tell and got caught on the leg straps of his other blanket. he then threw his self over one of the cattle panels just missing a T-post the panel collapsed  under him and he broke a small 2" pine tree he got free of it and raced around the pasture he Finlay stopped when the straps broke and the other blanket fell away. we took him over to our barn looking him over nothing looked broke thank god  and i thought he got away with just a few minor scrapes until we pulled his blanket off. His right front leg in the fleshy part in between his  forarm and shoulder was split open about 5 inches and their was what looked like a puncture wound into the muscle it was not bleeding very badly.  it must of happened from the cattle panel. We got him to the vet. he chose not to stitch him closed because it had been a few hour's  and said he didn't want to trap bacteria so he just scrubbed it out and rinsed it the skin is pulled away from the muscle about three inches above the gash .
He received a shot of penicillin and was given 10 days of antibiotics along with spraying it twice a day with Shriner's and being in a stall. after that he said give him light exercise for a few day's then he will be back to normal work . So it is not a serious as I thought I'm very thankful for that.He is staying at riding buddy/neighbors house so i can visit him a couple times a day with out hearing about waisting gas from hubby. and with  nothing better to do but eat maybe he will put the  50lbs i have been trying to get on him.
The sucky part is if i hadn't let him go play with the other horses he wouldn't of been all jumpy and would have stood their waiting for me to untangle him but  at least  he didn't break a leg.
Left pic 1 day after injury the swollen area is were the skin is pulled away from the muscle
right day 2 You can already see an improvment!  day 3

Limestone challenge

Sponsoring a junior can be fun,

Oct 5th

Ride camp is in Cave junction OR, only a short 20-30 min drive from home so, I didn't have to get up real early YAY!! I woke up and sent kid's on their way to school. Then packed cooler's and other last minuet stuff. I gave Adam a few hour's sleep before I headed over to load the horses. Adam was nice enough to come help get every one in. Only Jasper and Twilight would be doing this ride but we were bringing all four of our horses for the camping "experience". Adam went to do pickup/drop off's with our kid's while Me and the dog's headed to RC. I had a short stop for gas and propane in Selma and I was on my way again. If you plan to try this ride here's a warning, While driving you have to watch the people in Cave Junction, They do not seam to understand a fully loaded truck and trailer will not stop on a dime when they decide to J-walk directly in front of you!( Those of us from around here understand that most the people in this town could be cover model's for high time's so that may help explane them ) Twice someone decided they could not wait another second to cross, I missed the last one by inches.

I arrived at camp, a very Large fenced in field. I look around and see the perfect spot. A water tub and two porta potties' yay! I bundled up (it was uncomely cold for only the 5th of OCT windy and cloudy and the weather called for rain, lot's of it YUCK) After unloading the horses I set about filling hay bag's and lugging water bucket's. Twilight helped make my job easer he showed me he could reach the bale's on the tailgate so I didn't bother with his hay bag. I set up the tent and canopy although I got yelled at for the canopy. I guess the lady though I was going to jinx the weather if I was repairing for rain, I told her not to worry it was for shade>G< It was only 2:00 Adam and the girl's would not be showing up till around 4:00. I had a man ask me if Breana was coming and how her horse fund was coming He had a donation to give her when she showed up. After that I took a nap and read.

Adam showed up with Emily and Breana close to 5:00. A while later a friend of our's came by he had been in CJ visiting his girlfriend he brought her by to meet us. After they left Adam saddled up Jasper and twilight so I could go for a short ride with Taylor when she showed up. Adam got bored waiting so he took Jasper for a ride without her. I didn't mind in the least. When Taylor and her parent's showed up Emily saddled up lexie, Rose who was camped near us and nicely mentioned the bridle was missing a curb strap I hadn't even noticed. She was nice enough to lend us one for the weekend. Then Em and Taylor rode around RC for awhile. It was almost dark and time for the ride meeting when I realized I had not registered or vetted

threw, OOP's. We signed up and I turned in the certificate for a free rump rug I was giving away. then on to the ride meeting, 30's start at 7:00 but we had three color's to follow like at pacific crest, first red/white/blue then orange/white, then red/white/blue again. They said they would do the rest of the vet in's in the morning since it was dark. Adam,EM and breana went to the volunteer meeting while Tay and I went to make dinner. After eating we check on all the horses refilling bucket's and hay bag's and giving Jasper and twilight their BP mix. Taylor's mom Terrie made my day :-) she brought me her rain slicker and a insulated rain jacket since I didn't have one. Plus she packed Tay's saddle bag's full of stuff for us both it was nice having someone look out for me I'm usually the one who think's of all that stuff for everyone I think it's the mom in her, We mom's always' have to make sure everyone is taken care of. Terrie and Joe headed home they have a horse that need's antibiotic's every few hour's but would be at the vet check in the morning.

We wake up at 5am BRRR I am so glad I sleep with my ride clothe's under my PJ's The girl's were happy I had them do it too ! After forcing myself to eat cold bagel's I set about getting everything else ready. Adam took Jasper up to vet in and had Tay bring Twilight up. I got all the last min stuff together and realized I needed to find Jasper's breast collar. The horses had vetted in all A's good. We tack up and get ready to ride the mile to the start when we realize the horses never got their number's so we swing by to get them on our way out. We fast walk the horses to the start and get their right in time for it to start I looked around hoping to find a water troth but nothing .The start is a unraveled road so everyone was moving along at a good pace. Once again Twilight was a perfect gentleman he doesn't get worked up at all over the commotion of the start. Jasper was trotting on a loose rein with no pulling and not one small buck! the road starts climbing up a mountain almost immediately. I kept having to tell Tay stay at a trot she was wanting to gallop like a few other's were doing. It didn't take long for her to have some respect for how fast Twilight can move at a trot, that boy move's! We kept moving up the hill and the horses were feeling good. Jasper clipped something with his hoof and it went to the left I figured it was a small Piece of wood since I had seen brown from the corner of my eye. We go about forty feet Moving right along when Tay say's "I think I lost my stirrup!" She think's she lost it? Well now I know what Jasper had stepped on, I'm just wondering how it took her soo long to notice. I jump off and walk down the hill to find it luckily it was in plain view. I retrieve it then puff up the hill to Tay. after putting it back on the saddle we set out again. We catch up quickly to a few rider's. We take a left off the road we had been following and threw a couple large puddle's that Jasper tip-toe's around in fear they might swallow him whole. Twilight just splashed threw the middle of um. That trail pop's us up on another road and to the left I see a water troth and a bale of hay, It must be one of the 50's vet check's for later in the day. I stop to offer water even though we are only 15-20 min in to the ride, Both horses drink great! We then head right on a service road for a while. Tay and I were talking and having a great time she even spotted our turn off the road. We take a left and start heading down a steep and very narrow trail that zig zag's down the mountain. I had Tay get off to walk it on foot then I jump off and do the same. About halfway down the very long mountain we hear a horse up above calling for someone. I was hoping it was not a horse who had gotten loose and was barreling towered's us since it sounded very upset over something. when the trail leveled out some near the end We stopped to get back on I see a Horse and rider coming up behind us. You ever notice if something embarrassing is going to happen it will be in front of someone? Well Tay had jumped up and I go to swing up ,My saddle almost slide's under Jasper's belly. He turn's his head and give's me one of those look's that say's "You just don't learn" Before fixing it I offer to let the lady pass but she said she was fine. I like to ride with a loose girth but, not that loose. I fix his saddle and tighten it up a bit. I take him a few feet so I can stand on a bank to get up so I would not have a repeat performance and we were on our way again. The trail is very pretty, we cross a little stream then the trail take's a left .

We ride with the lady (I cant remember her name just that the horse she rode last year was April) And make real nice time! Were all talking and we almost miss our right turn, I really need to work on the whole talking/paying attention thing. We now hit service road's again and they are mostly down hill we let the Lady go ahead since I don't like working my horse fast down hill's for long period's. Stay is doing great a smile is plastered to her face and she's loving it. We try feeding the horses apple's but they kept falling some horse back their is going to be real happy .We ride with a couple people we had caught up with for a while then decide to pick up the pace. Tay need's to pee so when were a safe distance away we stop for her, now she has rode twilight a bit but she is used to her older QH pony Rain who when she stop's she can drop the rein's and do what ever, well twilight go's "hey im free "and continue's on down the trail. I know if I take off after him I can catch him but it would turn into a race and that it might take awhile. so I stay put, we see Twilight a way's up the road he had stopped and started eating . I tell Tay to go get him and I follow behind she catches him. We come up on a trot by and Carol Crawford/ Meyer's was their taking number's she tell's us our orange loop is coming up in about two mile's not to miss it. We go a way's loving the view's from the mountain top's we pass Barry the photographer from Headwater's and then the trail start's down, We see a small plane close by Turn's out it was Dennis Grow our shoer, he was flying our course. We come to an intersection and I see red/white/blue in front of us or yellow /white if we go to the right so we take a right since their were hoof print's and I had heard that sometimes they say orange but really it is yellow. Well Twilight was not happy about it but he went we climbed and dropped a bit were feeling good thinking we will make the vet check 9-9:30 and we would have if the road hadn't looped back around to the trot by! Carol told us we were not the first to do it so I felt a little better :-) Soooo back to the other road and by Barry again I told him I just wanted to make sure he had lot's of pictures for us to buy. So back to the turn again we go straight this time and not half a mile later their is the orange turn, Very well marked. We take a left on a service road some were in here we found a old fire truck just parked and left. We jump off and go down a steep trail. Heather ( I had met her the night before) and her friend's came up behind us we get to another service road and everyone get's back up. we ride all but the last half mile to the vet check with them, They were very nice!

Tay and I get to the vet check her mom and Joe were waiting for us and took lots of picture's. Adam mentioned a lady had told him she rode with us for a while and that I might want to ride with a tighter girth and had told him what happened. LOL We give the horses a drink twilight didn't want any he wanted food we take them to P/R Jasper went right down but Twilight took a little longer but I heard that him being a pony and not an Arab that he will not pulse down as quickly. When he decided to drink he was their a while. Both horses vetted threw Great Twilight all A's jasper A's and a B in altitude but that could be because he is a brat about his mouth's being messed with ever since I had to get a sucker stick from the back of his mouth ( he had stolen an unsuspecting 4-H kids sucker when they were not paying attention tried to eat it stick and all )

We are next to last leaving the vet check, The trail head's out in a different direction then we came in on. We ride along a two lane road a while before taking a right onto a wide trail. Twilight and Tay jumped a few log's along the trail. We climb

up and were amazed when we saw Lake selmac Way in the distance, it didn't feel like we had been riding long at all. the trail take's us along the top of a mountain it had really warmed up so we started stripping off layer's poor Jasper looked like a walking coat rack. I remember Richard (my 5 yr old son) had asked for a "apprize" from the ride so I pick him up one of those big pinecones. We hit another forest service road we come up on a rider who had stopped to rest her horse she asked us if we knew we were on the 50 loop, I said yes the 30 followed this part of their trail. She caught us again a while later right before we started up a trail. Adam had mentioned a hill coming up that he had heard called hell hill, I now understand it is not a hill it is a mountain and you go from the bottom to the top in a straight shot, no switch backs I would not be apprized if it were a mile long STEEP rocky climb. I got off Jasper half way up when he was wanting to slow and walked behind him. twilight just boogied on up. We met up with the 50 miler again and another 30 miler. We all slowly made our way to the top. After this hill I decided two thing's, one I need to teach my horse to tail and two after carrying myself up this hill I decided no more excuses I need to lose the extra weight so my horse does not have to work so hard! We get to the top and stop to rest I don't get back on till I'm sure I wont die and am done gasping for breath, I really was apprized not to find a water tank here, the horses could really use a drink. We all stop to let the horses eat some grass Jasper decide's he want's to go so Tay and I leave the other two we go around a corner and their is water YAY!!! They drink for a long while we didn't rush them we didn't leave till they started playing in it. The other two rider's came and let their horses drink while we take a right down a service road the 50 miler passes us and we don't see her for a while a mile or two into it we come up on her stopped she think's we all took a wrong turn sooo back we go up the road we find were we all got off course it was kind of confusing how it was marked you could tell a few other's had made the same mistake. Tay and the lady (sorry I am bad with name's but I see her at the ride's) are going back and forth they were both laughing really hard, they were at a trot but they were "racing". We rode with her all but our last few miles. we came up on the 30 miler she said she was walking in, her horse was done after making sure she was ok and did not need anything we went on our way. The service road head's down then you take a short trail down to another road a guy was their asking our number's he tell's tay and me to take a left and their was water a mile down then two miles from that point to the finish. We wave bye to the 50 miler her trail go's the other way. We fly down the road we made it a little over three min to the water I figured 15 mph so We were really moving considering Twilight is just 12'2 hands!! after the horses get their fill of the water we head on down the trail at a trot. Instead of walking the last mile we trot in all but the last 1/4 mile. I had thought the cutoff was 2 but it was around 2:30 so we had 45 min not 15 before the cuttoff.

Jasper's pulse is dropped within four min twilight take's about 13 but he vet's in A's and only one A- Jasper received two B's but the rest were A's. since they had done close to 40 mile's on what is considered a very tough ride I was very happy with his score. The last 30 mile rider we had seen on the trial make's it with min to spare. Tay and I get 11 and 12th out of 13. after getting the horses settled at the trailer we go to the vet and spend a few hour's volunteering. Last year they had served a steak dinner yum but this year it was breakfast so we made dinner then headed up to the vet area to watch the last of the 50's come in in the dark. The owner of the property had given the RM's a fire pit to use so a bunch of us sat around it later that night talking and sharing marshmallow's and chip's. It was a bunch of fun and I can't wait till next year's ride!

 Mon NOV 1 07

A friend and I were made aware of some STARVING horses. We were asked to help with a cut on a horses leg. We had been told they were skinny but were not prepared for what we found!! After removing the blanket from the 20yr old mare I was amazed she could hold her body upright and her wound was wrapped so tightly it was cutting off circulation. The lady said that the mare was injured in some wire laying around turns out (from a neighbor i talked to ) the mare had tryed to jump the fence into someones yard and did not clear it. This mare can hardly walk for her to attempt to jump a fence in her condition would be out of pure desperation!!! The other three horses are more savable the lady has agreed to get rid of the old mare and one of the TB a friend of mine is taking The TB were getting him tonight, she is hoping to find someone who want's him who can care for him but is trying to do her part in helping untill then. the other two she say's she will never give up but we have talked her into "boarding" The other two at another friend of mines since they have no shelter not even tree's where they are now, we will have the support of the local animal protection agency(they have been out their but wont do anything yet ) not to return them and have petition's signed by the neighbors about the state of the horses. So as soon as we get all the legal stuff worked out we could/will give them up to the right people right now we just want them out of their! We need help to rehabilitate the horses (donations of hay/money/blankets etc) .Of the other two one will need a home or help with feed bill as husband's have said NO MORE HORSES unless we have help because of cost of hay and find new home's for them later etc (15-17 yr old reg TB off the track) The other IMHO needs put to sleep but because of the extra $$$ going out on feed etc on the other guy's we can't afford to do much but feed and vet if in an emergency. I know we are not financially in a place to do a four horse rescue but we can't just sit and watch the horses starve to death .The local rescue agencies that have been contacted can't or wont help out or take the horses at this time. The neighbors I talked to have been throwing their apples and pairs and some have even bought hay now and then to throw the horses are kept blanketed so it is harder to see the state of these horses from farther away. One looks much like the Malaysia horses we saw the pictures on a few month's back

Nov-1-07

I wrote earlier asking for help (financial donations/hay etc) with four starving horses.I have a lady who is going to be a foster mom for one of them, (THANK YOU!!) We finally talked the lady out of them after three week's of trying, during this time they have had no hay and only what the neighbor's have thrown over the fences. The only help we have had is our local animal control and protection has gone out to talk to her a few time's.We finally got the go ahead from her so we waisted no time! My friend Teri and I picked up all four horses tonight, They came right up to us and I think would of put the halter's on them self's if they could of. I led the way up the driveway with the mustang pony, I don't know if he smelt hay in the trailer or what but, he almost drug me to it and tried to climb in, I tied him outside so we could load the old lady first we were worried she might go down and we wouldn't be able to get the other horses out around her she was even more feeble today then the last time we saw her, if that's possible. It took allot of effort on her part to take that small step up in the trailer but we got her in and closed the divider Teri had to pull the two TB she was holding back they were also trying to climb in and take her with them if needed. I loaded the pony then the TB loaded themselves. It was like they new we were their to help them. A short trailer ride later and we were at the place they will be staying we had to unload them in a church parking lot because our old truck is only a 2 WD we walked them a quarter mile down to the barn.We were almost dragging the really bad one but we got them to the barn. We put the old girl in a stall and set a bunch of grass hay in-front of her. we put the pony by himself since his weight is not as bad we did not think the two TB's needed him chasing them from the hay. We then put the two TB ( reg names are dam SAM and the other is SAM) together and dumped half a 150lb bale of grass in front of them.We then set their and watched them eat. It was a feeling i can not explain knowing we had made a difference, we saved these guys. I know bringing them back may be a long road but is worth it! I will be posting picture's soon it was to dark tonight to take any.

I was not in the greatest of mood's when this was wrote, since i lost my sense of humor please use your's If you find i complaned overly much!

I was up bright and early Friday morning which for me means 5:00 am I jumped out of bed only to step on all 3 of our dogs on the way to the light well, at least I didn't step on any kids this time. I stumbled into the kitchen and their was a take out box with biscuits and gravy waiting for me :) yay (Adam works nights and gets home 4:00-4:30 ) the trailer was packed so all I had to do was pack coolers and wake the kids. 6:30 and I'm out the door with the kids taking them to their grandmas 20 min away 7:30 am I am still sitting at my ex mother in laws house trying to coax my 5 yr old son out of the car, guess I scared him a little too much with my talk about stranger's and not wandering away from his aunt and uncle while in Portland OR that weekend. . I almost forget to pick up Breana who is coming to volunteer another ride.

Finally I get back to the house Wake up DH after 4 hrs sleep and send him to my moms with our 3 yr old Ysabel. Emily, Breana and I take the truck and head over to the horses. We get them washed in record time, they were ready to load by the time Adam showed up. we finally leave around 9:56 am not bad for me since I was shooting for 9 am. A stop for gas and forgotten items and we were on our way. The ride up was mostly uneventful (truck had some sputtering issues up the hills guess its time to finally rebuild the carburetor) it didn't seam all that long considering we had crammed 4 people and a puppy in a 3 person cab. We talked allot and Breana decided to name our truck since it didn't have one so our old Chevy is now skip.

We arrive at camp and decide we should go for shade even if that meant walking a little ways to the water and toilet. upon unloading the horses we find Taurus has a cut above his tail somehow. received it from the trailer? Its nothing big though. I take Breana and the certificates for rump warmers to be given as prizes and we find Kelly the ride manager to give them to her and have Breana check in. We tack up and take the horses for a quick ride. Emily had no problems with Twilight (our 7 yr old 12'2 hand Hackney pony) he could care less we were some where new with a bunch of new horses and he didn't ever care about the free range horse eating cows wandering threw camp.

I was very excited, Adam had rode this ride last year but I was unable to and just the small amount of trails we tried were gorgeous!!!The horses vet in all A's twilight was great for the vet he really has came a long way's in the last 4 months we have had him. He was abused when we got him and hated more then one person around him and hated his face being touched now, he loves attention. We told Breana that she could have 1/2 the money from any of the sponges/bags, rump warmer's, kicking beads ect that she sell's to go towered's her horse fund. that girl is a natural salesmen!! She picked up the table with the stuff on it and put it near the dirt road she wouldn't let anyone by with out looking. She sold quit a bit the whole weekend she ended up making a  lot                                                              sale's towered's her fund and had $15.00 in donations towers her "cause"

we were told dark thirty was the ride meeting so we wandered down their. It was very simple we follow pink ribbons 14 miles to vet check 11 miles back to camp and the finish. 7:30 am start time for the 25's we go back check on the horses give them more hay and beet pulp mixture, pack a vet bag. I sew d-rings to Emily's bare back pad she will be using so she can have saddle bags to carry her water and emergency supply's etc and go to bed

5 :00 we jump up(we only hit snooz two times insted of five) and Adam run's the bag down to the truck taking stuff to the vet check before the 5:30 deadline. We eat our "healthy" breakfast of bagle's and a soda. Then we start getting the horses ready for the day. We walk the horses to the water tanks where they take a long drink. For some reason they always like the "communal" water better then the stuff we lug over to them in their buckets. 6:30 we start tacking up and help Emily with last min stuff. It's so great having Breana come to help she's always right their ready to get whatever you need or hold something and all the time with a I'm so happy to be here smile. I cant wait till she's riding these with us! We watch the demented people start AKA ride and tie (I have lots of respect for you!! I don't know if I will EVER try it )Before we head over to warm up we  take them to the water tank where they once again drink (did I mention their full buckets) we (by we I mean Adam and the girls>G<) had just refilled and lugged 5 miles back to the trailer that the horses were to good for ? ,Then we put some E-lytes under their lips ( I heard about it from a vet on ridecamp) While in a way it seamed rather crule to make them go till they found water with cotton mouth I decided in the end it was for the greater good.

We spend ten min warming up then 7:30 and we were off. We put our self's near the end not knowing how twilight will react to all the commotion we really didn't need to worry he was acting like a old pro at it the only problem he had was wanting to go off the dirt road and onto the trail's the cows use. Jasper was soo good this time! His last ride i had fought him and made him walk at the start and did not allow him to move out until He remimbered I was in charge. Well it only took once of doing that i guess rode him with a loose rein at a trot NO pulling YAY! We rode about 1/2 a mile then over a bridge and up a small hill then a right turn and you are on a wide ATV trail. Adam em and I ride a way's together but we have to stop so Em can readjust the bare back pad. It has stirrups and she was putting to much weight on the right one. We ride on a bit more passing some of the people who passed us during our stop,we get a ways away and Adam need's to stop! he didn't tie on his rump warmer well enough and it was sliding off. Em take's this opportunity to fix her "saddle "again. We ride a ways more and Have to stop once again for Emily. We ride a few more min and stop again this is annoying! Adam has to fix the other side of his rump warmer this time and Emily needs to readjust again. Adam decide's he will not remount until Taurus will stand still like he know's he should and tell's us to go on with out him he'd catch us in a min. I am very impressed by Jasper during all this. He stood calmly every time we stopped and looked longingly down the trail (well except the time people came flying past and even then he just started to follow them)

We continue down the trail a way's We pass a couple who had stopped and were fixing something we ask if they need any help they say no just a saddle problem so we continue on our way. Then it come's to a highway crossing We see some lady's on the other side so at least we are not so far in the back now. It' not a busy road at all so crossing is easy. The trail follows the highway a while

We catch up to the two lady's and follow them awhile they tell us to go ahead and pass so we do a few min later Em has to stop so she can once again readjust I ask her couldn't we have done this before we passed the lady's? So the lady's pass us,Em get's settled and off we go again and I put her in the front, I had noticed she was always way right when she had to readjust so I rode behind her and every so often when I noticed her starting to lean I would say  "LEFT" "LEFT" "LEFT" I was saying it so often I started to feel like a drill sargent. We made good time for awhile after that. After crossing a foot bridge we caught the two lady's again they had stopped to let their horses drink It was kind of boggy so we passed it up. From their the trail wound up a hill and I got stung on my leg %&^&$%! We followed the RM's direction's about running into bee's and hauled ass out of their.

The trail wined's down a hill to another creek crossing we stop in this one, Both horses drink and drink. We sponge them a bit then continue on. It has been about an hour or so and I am starting to wonder about Adam but, we had been making good time so maybe that was why he had not caught up. We pass another couple on our way up a mountain our guys are used to way worse climb's so we let them move on up it at a fast trot and a little galloping. Their are some rock's in a few place's on the trail and I slow for them,as great of a horse Jasper is rock's are not his strong point he finds them all! I look up and twilight is flying threw them missing all of them. I have to say the trail's and scenery on this ride is some of the prettiest I have seen! And creeks when ever you think your horse could use water.

Things were going great and I decided to get out the camera and get some shot's of Em during her first ride and the pretty meadow we were going threw. we ride bout 1/2 a mile and I notice the lack of hoof print's and We haven't seen a ribbon in a while. I decide to turn around. We let the horses go all the way back to the meadow where I see we missed out turn while I snapped picture's. Em goes "O ya their were three ribbons right their" I tell her next time speak up!

( meadow the trail on the right is what we should have been on )

We come up on a couple they mention that a guy on a pinto had passed them and was looking for us just a bit ago. We ride behind them a while we go over some high wood foot bridge's. Once again twilight did great as he took lead over the bridges. Before you do this ride make sure your horse will cross bridge's safely!! their are a few you would NOT want to fall off ! We decide to pick up the pace a bit and we leave the couple behind. We come up on a bow hunters camp along a pond (bow hunting opened same day) I look ahead and see Adam we run to catch up. Turn's out it took awhile for Taurus to remember his manner's so that's what took so long. We ride along on a dirt road a bit and I once again decide to take some pictures.

Twilight decides he doesn't like the road and head's off to the right. Emily just let's him, then demand's I do something about it. I remind her SHE is riding him and she needs to take charge. She yell's some more then seeing we wont help her make's him listen to her. We ride along some more and once again I notice the lack of hoof print's. We decide to turn around, meanwhile Twilight decide's to trek cross country again. Emily yell's at us, Adam yell's back at her,She yell's at him he yell's at her etc... Then she start's really whining. We tell her to get off walk him over to us and get back on. Now Emily has been riding a lot and can jump right up but.. her getting off is just frustrating !! the horse cannot even blink or she yell's at him to stand then she get's off very s-l-o-w-l-y . our 5 yr old get's off our much taller horse in a quarter of the time. So once again she's yelling at dad he's yelling back. I suggest to him he ride ahead Emily had behaved better with out him their. So he go's on ahead. Turn's out we missed the turn to the left when Twilight had decided to go right. Emily feel's bad cause her dad had really been looking towered to riding with her. We decide to try to catch him but their is to many down hill's so we give it up. Emily keep's slipping her feet out of the stirrup's And leaning to the right no matter how much I remind her to put her toes down and quit leaning and and wont fix it unless were stopped. On we went, stopping every little while for a lot longer then it should take to put your foot back in a stirrup! I Decide to ignore her while she's Blaming me for everything under the sun. I look around at the beautiful view's. Just when I really start enjoying myself again, she get's louder and talking about how mean I am because I want to trot while we can to make up some of our time. I tell her we have over an hour "stopped" and I don't think we are going to make it to the vet check in time. it's 10:20 I have no clue how much farther we have to go. She refuses to trot yell's at me and stop's to do something. I jump off and decide to see if my saddle will fit twilight I will ride with the bareback pad I drop both horses tack. Meanwhile Emily is yelling at me she doesn't WANT to hold both horses, Cant I hold my own horse while I untack and re-tack the horses? I always' make HER take care of her own horse. At this point I am wondering how much trouble I will get in if I ride into the vet check with out her, as wonderful as it sound's I decide against it.(she's lucky my new "happy" pill's work better then my old one's) I get the bare back pad on jasper but the girth that went to the English saddle is way to long with it. Dam I know it wont work on Twilight with the saddle he need's a super small one,Sooo I put everything back where it came from make Emily drink some water (She argue's over needing to drink as well) I get back on my horse and wait for her to get on. She put's her foot in the left stirrup twilight moves and her right stirrup fall's off!! I jump off and look at it. the bolt that hold's the screw is gone I try looking for it in the grass around us at the same time I notice all the bee's. We run on foot a way's down the trail and then stop to fix it. I pull out two zip tie's and use them in place of the bolt. We then continue on she decide's she can trot now so we make a little time up

11:05 We get to the vet check Jasper pulses right in. Twilight was a little nervous about the people so Adam who was about to leave told Emily to let him get something to drink. So I'm at the water tank Adam stay's an extra 10 min to see how things were going and help Em. I untacked Jasper His splint/fetlock boot's had gotten dirt in them and had rubbed a raw spot Ive used the cheap one's forever i finaly splurge and have problem's .....figures! I ask Em to see her vet card so I cant take it to the vet with us and I see she has no out time!! she hadn't taken him right back over to pulse. Adam offer's to sponsor her the rest of the ride so I can finish  I tell him no go ahead and leave. I vet threw all A's im not surprised because of the easy pace Jasper acted like we hadn't been doing anything he had hardly broke a sweat all day. Twilight get's all A's as well. Emily's out time is 11:50 mine was 11:35 O well. One of the lady's who was volunteering (I don't remember her name but I have seen her on the cover of an old EN magazine and seen her at a few ride's before) She come's over and tells me how to ride the rest of the ride if we want to finish on time. I thank her and start retacking while Jasper is eating everything in sight. I finish and help Emily retack then we get something to eat and use the porta pottie. 11:50 and were off the trail goes back the way we came for about half a mile then goes off to the left we ride threw a winedy trail then we go down a very steep hill and at the bottom is a stream both horses drink even though we had just left the vet check 15 min before. Their is a lot of up and down on this part and a few stream's about an hour out we were headed down A mountain I hear Emily start screaming. I look back and Twilight has his head down scratching it on his leg's then he start's bucking It's then

I notice all the bee's! hundred's of them are covering Twilight he's freaking out and Emily come's off to the left right into a huge pile of stick's I close my eye's I cant watch I just know she's going to get stuck with one. Twilight go's tearing by me I jump off and run to check Emily. I check her over looking for broken bone's or blood she's fine thank god! I make her run with me away from the bee's while I start yelling for Twilight but I can see him way away still running. I figure what the hell and I whistle worth a try I guess. I can just see part's of him way down the mountain he slowed when I whistled so I do it again,he turn's around and come's running back to us! WOW I am so happy with this guy! I check Emily over better now that we are away from the bee's she's a bit scraped up and has some sting's but she's fine. We don't see anything on Twilight so Emily get's back up and we keep going now with all the CONSTANT whining I have heard from her today I fully expect to get an earful about all her aches and pain's and I wouldn't blame her for it now, but Nothing not one complaint. We hit a dirt road and we kick up our speed a bit until twilight decides he doesn't like the road and try's to follow along side it.... threw the brush. Of course we forgot a leadrope so I use the string from my sponge and lead him that way. We pass some people in a truck they were looking for their rider's saddle, she had met up with the bee's as well and had to stash her saddle or something. Within a mile or so we are back on trail so I toss Emily the string I was leading Twilight with. This half of the ride is so beautiful we drop down threw many creek's and streams and the horses were drinking great. Emily had even started to enjoy herself and the scenery. We were able to move a little while Emily had fun letting Twilight jump a few small logs over the trail. We crossed threw a really cool tree that had fallen over the trail and had a chunk cut out of it to let us threw. After we crossed the Rogue river( ? ) we came up on Barry the photographer he had been waiting for us, Adam had asked him to get some good pictures of Emily on her first ride so he had waited for us. after that the trail is mostly flat with a few small hill's. It eventfully loop's you back to the trail we started out on that morning and then back to camp. Did I mention as soon as we crossed the paved road and were within two mile's of camp Emily's Whining came back with a vengeance? Well it did and by the time we got back to camp it was none to soon! We vetted the horses threw once again all A's. We were overtime by around 40 min. but I decided at least I still had my sanity and had not given in to any Thought's of leaving Emily to find her own way to camp. I let Adam know that in the futer he can sponsor Emily if he want's her make it to adulthood.

(Emily After the ride get's comforted by our old basset hound (he passed on in sep)

The next morning at breakfast and award's Emily got an award for being the toughest junior because of her bee incident. She was thrilled. We took Brenda for a short ride on the horses then we headed home. The ride home was great Aside from the call from my sister where she told me our 3 yr old daughter had taken scissors to her long hair, somehow it seamed a fitting end to the weekend.

Pacific crest
Mood:  happy
Topic: endurance
 Pacific crest july 7 2007
My fist ride of the season wasn't until July this year because of crappy weather that resulted in to much red sticky mud/clay to safely condition in.So needless to say I couldn't wait! I dint think i got much sleep the whole week before the ride.
Friday morning for once i was ready to leave on time! Emily My 12 yr old step daughter) and I caught, bathed, fed, watered and loaded Jasper and Taurus while Adam ran our 5 other kids to various relatives we had suckered in to watching them. 9:30 am Were loaded and waiting in the suburban for Adam 10:15 Adam finally pulls up in the van and asks me what I plan to feed our horses.Crap i forgot the hay
10:30 were rolling but need to stop for Ice/air and gas o ya and splint boots at the local tack shop since mine finally broke in the washer last night 11:30 we Finlay get around to Brenna's house she's our other 12 yr old volunteer were bringing.Luckily nothing goes wrong on the way to ride camp besides a bathroom break and a wrong turn. You ever notice how many weird looks you receive when you have cattle panels and hay strapped to your roof?
we get to ride camp around 1:00 Its a fully fenced lush pasture.I swear you can see our horses mouths start to watter. Yeah! our spot from last year was still Available its near the entrance and on your way in from the ride you can toss your saddle over the fence and walk in to the P/R area. We UN- pack and put up our "redneck" corral using our trailer as one side and the pasture fence as another we use our three cattle panels and two tee posts to make a large rectangle and for our gate we tie lead ropes from the post from the pasture fencing to our trailer. After all this we realize they changed where they put the watter this year and we have to walk 80 miles across camp for it. o well that's what we brought the girls for right? >g<
After a short ride to loosen them up and a small problem with horse eating cows we vet in. Jasper gets all A's but a B in hydration i figure it was all that time in the hot trailer well I'm glad now i decided to do one last 30 before moving up.
Taurus got all A's
The ride meeting was good same trails as last year the 50's follow the red/white blue ribbons us 30's however ...The first part to the vet check red/White/ blue then on leaving the vet check orange and white then some where in their are pink/white that the 10 mile fun ride follows? and red/white/blue again?
The 30 starts at 7:00 am but as usual I wake up when i hear the 50's get up ... around 4:30 since they leave at 5:30 I lay in bed a while then bundle up I check on horses give them their BP slush and make everyone breakfast of instant oat meal. Emily and Brenna have to meet Terrie canavello the ride manager by 6 am to start their volunteer duties. I gave them my warnings about how to behave and be help-full and off they went. Adam carts our vet bag to the truck for our vet check and we tack up. I'm really worried about the professional choice splint/fetlock boots i bought. I was breaking the never use anything new rule but Jasper needs them so..
I decided to start in the back since my well behaved horse sometimes looses his brain for a few min. I told Adam to go ahead I'd catch up later since Taurus was behaving wonderfully for him.I love the first part of this ride its early so its nice and cool plus for 9 of the 12 miles you are next to a lake. The horses have plenty of watter stops. After crossing a Paved road you ride threw Lilly glen horse camp then follow trails around the lake. Their are rocks you need to watch for though hidden under the dust/dirt Jasper slipped on one such smooth faced rock as he was trotting up a little hill it was covered by dirt and wham! his back legs went down but without loosing a stride on he went I stop ed and checked him he was fine whew! I rode a few min with a couple nice ladies one one a HUGE Quarter horse and her friend on a Arab. Around 4 miles from the vet check I cough up with Adam. He had spent ten min in the lake trying to get Taurus to drink .Said he wasn't acting his self but Taurus perked back up having his buddy back. About a mile of trotting later Taurus wanted to slow. Adam was concerned saying Taurus didn't "feel" like normal and said he might pull at the vet check.
Luckily, I remembered the trial from last year and hopped off 1/4 a mile from the vet check .Jasper can trot in and his pulse is down, Taurus always takes longer though.Jasper pulsed in at 55. This is a 30 min hold and tack off so i have to hurry. I gave him another drink an E-lite and a bite of food then proceeded to the vet.You would have thought he hadn't been fed in WEEKS the way he way acting over Bing taken away from his food! he was dancing all over trying to step on my feet! DR Jason was having a hard time getting a pulse because he wouldn't hold still. No one would of believed this horse has beginners safely riding/handling him at home.He got A's except b on hydration again and b on gait, because he was dancing around to much to do a good trot out.Taurus still hadn't pulsed down he was hoovering above 60 he was eating and drinking like mad though. 24 min later he pulsed in Adam told me he was going to pull if Taurus vetted threw I was tacking up when Adam came over Taurus's pulse had went back above 60 the vet had given him A;s on Everything else
10:01 I leave the vet area alone, the closest riders are 20 min in front of me and the others would not be leaving the vet area for about 15 min.Jasper is having no problems leaving his buddy or the other horses behind. He tryed to turn around once because we had to pass the "ambulance" horse trailer and one of the horses bing loaded was sure it was going to eat him. We went around and trotted down the road.1/2 mile up their is lime across the road and a bunch of red/white /blue ribbons marking a turn well, l i know we did not go this way last year but, their are no prints from horses past it. I'm already missing having Adam here to make the decision for me its always nice to have someone else to blame for wrong turns >g< so we turn on to the trail.Their was such a dense tree cover we were completely shaded and it was cool so I let Jasper go out of a trot for a few min until we started climbing and climbing ,its gradual but i don't know how long it is so we go nice and slow it is hot and humid in the sun. well I'm getting more worried about coming this way I keep hearing in my head" the trails are the same as last year' so I try to call Emily on her cell phone so she can ask someone but of course, no service. I turn around I decide i was not going to make my horse do the 50 if i was on the wrong trail.
About a mile down the mountain I run into a Lady on a flea bitten Arab I ask her what ride she's doing she says the 30. She's done this ride a couple years ago and they came this way so.. we turn around and start climbing ..again. I'm sure my horse is not to thrilled about re climbing this section but, lucky for me he's forgiving.I Ride with  the lady on the flea bitten Arab Her name is Pat and her horse is Apollo. she's from a town that's pretty close by. Very nice lady! Jasper settled into Apollo's pace and with the rocks and Bing down hill it was trot, trot, trot, walk, walk, trot etc at least the walking sections gave me a chance to feed Jasper his carrots and eat a snack myself. We were passed on our way down the mountain by a teenage girl and her grandmother (how cool is it To have a grandma like that) we caught back up with them at the bottom where we went from trail to service roads we trotted /cantered our horses together for a while on the service roads we were now on, they decided on a break so me and Kat went on
The last part of the ride is a lot of service roads but we could make up time for the rocky sections. My phone rang it was Emily I asked if everything was all right. it was. she was just having fun with dads cell and had to call someone.I get off the phone with her and two seconds later my mom calls! hows the ride, how did you do, were on the way to the coast with Ysabel (my 3 yr old) etc. I Get off the phone and guess what ? Emily calls again. Did I try to call? because she is sure she heard the phone ring ahh.I would turn it off but I ride with it in case someone needs to contact me in an emergency about one of my kids so .. I think I rode over a mile at a trot /canter with the phone to my ear. We walk the horses a while to cool them still no watter on this loop yet hmm..
Pat is still walking I decide to speed up again. A while later she catches me on a walking break. We rode together the rest of the ride.I Gave Pat some Tylenol so far Ive never needed it but i have handed it out at every ride.We go threw a neat area called moon prairie lots of rocks but not on the trail/road :-) the rest of the ride went pretty fast about 8 miles out we had a watter stop yeah! I went to sponge Jasper but the wind had been blowing so ,he was dry and cool even after all the trotting he just did. He was defiantly thirsty! We had 1/4 mile of walking where a road had been newly graveled/rocked it was nasty but we walked alongside it and gave the horses a needed rest. the last 2-3 miles of the ride is the same trail from the morning you come back threw Lilly glen. we came up on another rider who was yelling and cussing at her horse. We asked if she needed us to ride with her she said no she just hated her stupid horse now I'm not one to judge but... this lady then explained she had never had a horse that didn't like to go etc and then smacked the horses neck a few time's with her fist this horse is just trotting along not doing anything wrong! hmm I had admired this Lady's horse earlier and she had seamed nice enough but go's to show you cant judge a book by its cover. She passed me and Pat at a canter only for us to catch her again at the watter crossing at the horse campground. her horse was not wanting to go threw it she was crying hysterically saying she didn't understand this stupid horse not wanting to go etc we once again offered for her to ride with us she refused so we went on.
we trotted the rest the way to camp I dump my saddle on the fence rail near our trailer and go to walk by when i notice Taurus tied to the trailer and our rake Bing used as an IV pole SHIT!! Adam yells its not as bad as you think go vet threw

I walk all the way in and realize I left my vet card with my saddle *@#$%# I turn around walk back as 4 people pass me on their way in. I get my vet card go back and pulse in and vet threw he gets a b on hydration b+ on impulsion a c on his back! the saddle search begins again! everything else was A's

So that was my pacific crest ride story feel free to e-mail me with comments on to boring, to long, just right etc...
O ya on Taurus Well :
He continued to eat and drink at the vet check his pulse was still varied. then he peed and it was coffee color so ..Adam asked the vets recommendation and put him on a IV .He wasn't tyed up and Everything was an A .gut sounds, hydration, etc the vet said he was more then fit for this ride so they were trying to figure out what was wrong when some lady said your little bay was kicking him last night when i walked by so .. the diagnosis was ( I hope I get these right) ether a bruise caused by a kick that caused toxins to be released under stress or his selenium is to high/low. He started peeing clear and after 4 bags of IV stuff he was still drinking the buckets of watter Adam got for him and peeing every 20 min.He Is fine taking a few weeks R&R and we are getting his selenium checked
* Update on Taurus we took him to the vet and he had very low selenium
If your wondering how the girls did volunteering, I heard great things about how much help they were. I even received an e-mail thanking them from the ride manager. The girls said they had tons of fun learned allot and cant wait to do it again.

Thanks to  DR Anne Schwartz for her great care of Taurus and great attitude!
also thanks to the ride managers who put on a great ride
